Brow Liftby Melissa Johnson MD, FACS
Brow Lift (Forehead surgery)
Brow lift, also known as forehead lift, is a surgical procedure that tightens or alters the forehead and eyebrow regions to smooth the forehead, raise the upper eyebrows, and improve frown lines. Advances in brow lift surgery make it possible to perform the procedure through a variety of approaches, including endoscopy. Brow lift surgery is individualized for each patient. The surgical incisions used may vary with the technique selected by you and Dr. Johnson to meet your needs.

Are there different types of brow lift procedures?
Yes. There is an open technique and an endoscopic technique. The open technique involves making an incision in the hairline from ear to ear and pulling up on the forehead and removing the excess skin. The endoscopic technique involves small incisions in the hairline where an endoscope (camera) and small instruments are used to reposition the brows and to correct the creases of the forehead. Other procedures may be needed in conjunction to a brow lift to address other aspects of the face.
What is the surgical process?
The surgery is performed at a hospital. During surgery you will receive general anesthesia. The surgery will take between 1-3 hours depending on the extent of the procedure. Once you are awake you are taken to the recovery room for another 1-2 hours and then discharged home. Depending on the extent of the procedure performed, you might have drains placed.
Are there risks involved with a brow lift?
Yes, there are risks with any surgical procedure. Some of the possible risks with a brow lift are pain, infection, bruising, swelling, wound healing complications, hematoma/seroma, numbness of the incision or facial areas, asymmetry, unsatisfactory results or scars that may require a revision surgery, dry eyes, eyelid disorders, hair loss at the incisions, elevated hairline.
What is the recovery process?
The first few days you may have discomfort or a pressure feeling of the upper face. The extent of what is performed determines the amount of discomfort that you have. You are sent home on pain medications which will decrease your discomfort. You will have bruising and swelling of the forehead and it may descend down into the eyes and/or cheeks. We will recommend that you ice the area for the first 72 hours to help minimize swelling. We will see you about one week after surgery to evaluate your healing process.
