Laser Hair Removal in our Springfield, MA Office

BBL BroadBand LightTM: for safe, comfortable hair removal

The safest, most commfortable, and skin-friendly therapeutic laser hair removal treatments require precise, even heating of hair follicles coupled with cooling to protect the skin. To ensure maximum clinical safety, we use broadband light (BBL) energy to treat the melanin in hair follicles by gentle diffusion of heat down to the hair stems in the bulb. Laser hair reduction performed under the guidance of a qualified dermatologic surgeon such as Dr. Johnson is safe and effectively removes unwanted hair from the face, underarms, back, legs and bikini area. As a board certified plastic surgeon and qualified skin care doctor, I prefer the Forever Bare BBLTM laser hair removal system. It's safer on your skin, cooler, and more comfortable than other laser systems or electrolysis. Perfect for hair removal on sensitive face, legs, bikini areas and more.

Who should perform laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal procedures have become very popular, with nearly half a million such treatments performed by dermatologic surgeons each year. But a large number of procedures are also performed by nonphysicians who may lack proper training and are not closely directed by a physician in the clinical environment. Laser hair removal performed by poorly qualified pratitioners can increase the risk of skin burns, blistering, skin discoloration, swelling, redness, and scarring. While there may be a perception by the public that anybody can perform laser hair reduction, many physicians worry about the proliferation of nonmedical facilities and "medical spas" that offer laser hair removal treatments without licensed medical personnel on site. When considering practitioners for your laser hair removal treatments, keep safety in mind, and trust your skin to a skin doctor.

What is BBL laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal penetrates the hair shaft and disables the hair follicleBBL, or BroadBand Light, is an innovative light-based technology that utilizes pulses of light energy to gently penetrate into the skin and specifically target, disable and destroy unwanted hair follicles. This noninvasive treatment is a comfortable and easy treatment for the age old problem of unwanted body hair.

How does BBL laser hair removal work?

BBL delivers excellent photothermal energy to hair follicles. By selecting the appropriate wavelength for hair reduction (e.g. 590 nm, 640 nm, or 695 nm), our clinicians will be able to tailor the treatment to your skin type in order to achieve optimal results.

What areas can be treated?

BBL hair reduction offers patients a safe, fast, and effective alternative for dealing with unwanted hair. BBL is safe enough to be used on any part of the body (e.g., face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, arms)

Can tanned skin be treated?

An active tan from the sun or tanning beds is not appropriate for treating with BBL. Tanned skin has a lot of pigment or melanin that may also absorb the BBL light energy intended for the hair follicles. It is recommended that a person does not have sun exposure in the area to be treated for a period of 3 weeks prior to treatment with BBL. Self tanners must be faded from the skin for at least a week to 10 days prior to treatment. Discuss with your clinician the possibility of tanning during your series so that a safe regimen can be created.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

As previously mentioned, hair grows in 3 different stages. Hair can only be affected by light energy when it is in its anagen stage. Additionally, hair located on different body parts has different growth cycles and percentages of anagen hair at any one given time. Due to this physiology, we generallys suggest a series of 6 treatments, spread over a period of time, usually 4-8 weeks apart to address the growth cycle of the hair.

What will happen during the laser hair removal procedure? Will it be uncomfortable?

Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type of procedure performed. The procedure is gentle, noninvasive and safe. Generally, there is no need for a topical anesthetic but your clinician may choose to use it on more sensitive areas. Your clinician will discuss all of your options with you.

What should I expect after laser hair removal treatment?

You may experience some localized redness in the area that was treated that should resolve within a few hours. Results depend on your skin condition, the number and consistency of treatments, and the area treated. Your clinician will provide you with complete information about the post treatment care and results.

What aftercare do I need?

It is important to follow your clinician’s instructions. You may be given some skin care products and instructions on how to use them. If you must go outdoors, it is recommended that you cover your treated skin and use sunblock of SPF 30.

Is Laser hair removal permament?

We’d like to be able to tell you that laser hair removal is permanent. What we can tell you is that after a series of treatments, you will grow significantly less hair than you originally did, but you are likely to require occasional maintenance treatments to sustain the results you desire. Please discuss this issue in more detail with your provider when you are in for consultation or treatment.
